Allentown FFA in Indianapolis

(11/11/2010)
By Nichole Ondy, Chapter President

1,352 miles and nine months of practicing later, the Farm Business Management Team brought home a silver team ranking from National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. The National FFA Convention was held from October 19th-23rd. Individually, Kyle Genova placed gold. Aldean Brown, Amanda Kyle, and Chris Tyminski placed silver. Overall, the team placed 18th out of the 42 teams competing from across the country. Allentown also brought home another Three Star Chapter Rating on the national level, placing us in the top 2% of the nation and making us one of the best 150 chapters.
As well as the competition, National Convention offered many other forms of entertainment throughout the days. There were opportunities to walk through the career show, where colleges and sponsors had booths. These included John Deere, Tractor Supply, STIHL, Virginia Tech, the West Virginia University, and many others. For two nights, there was a rodeo at the state fair grounds, which many members enjoyed.
Nichole Ondy also participated in the National Days of Service while attending the convention. She was sent to Gleanors Food Bank, where 40lb boxes were made for the elderly through an assembly line of about 30 students from across the country.
All in all, convention is an opportunity every member should participate in. There are thousands of people to meet (over 50,000 students attend annually), contacts to make, things to buy, and competitions to win!

Apple Picking

(11/09/2010)
By Stuart Faunce, Chapter Reporter

The Allentown FFA Chapter took a field trip to Russo's farm to go apple picking. Russo's Farm is located in Chesterfield, NJ. The Russo's have been so gracious with the Allentown FFA by allowing us to come and pick apples on their beautiful farm. In addition, members were invited to walk through the corn maize, which was really fun!  The chapter traveled to Russo's for a chance for Allentown FFA members to build connections with fellow members. It was also an enjoying activity for our members to experience the crisp fall weather and the apple orchard. We had 22 Allentown FFA members attend the apple picking.

Allentown FFA at the New Jersey Beach Sweep

(10/30/2010)
by Taylor Eisenburg

This year's Beach Sweep was at Sandy Hook on October 23, 2010. We took a bus, arrived around 9:45 am, and left around 11:15 am. While at the beach sweep, there were about 200 other people present to clean up the beach alongside the Allentown FFA Chapter. While there, we were instructed to use a black bag for garbage and a white bag for recyclables. Along the beach, we found numerous articles, some of which were plastic bottles caps and pieces of lumber. With everyone's bag from the FFA chapter were put together, it made approximately one full bag and about a half of a white bag. The brisk air that gave us a tingling sensation on our noses kept us alive and alert! The enthusiasm around the project was amazing, and the attendance of ten chapter members, not including the instructors, was even better! After about an hour and a half of cleaning the beach, we were on our way home again! Silence filled the bus as we all craved food and tried to warm up! Although we were all tired and cold in the end, we all held a smile knowing we did something good for the environment.

FFA News

(10/19/2010)

By Reporter Stuart Faunce

This summer was a fun and busy one for the Allentown FFA. On June 25th the FFA took a trip to Long Beach Island. Everyone that attended had a great time. The water was refreshing and the sand was just right in temperature. In July, the FFA was represented at Freedom Fest. The idea was to help educate people on FFA and agriculture. There was a booth manned by both FFA members and Alumni and on Saturday there were games for children to play, such as a hay bale toss, a sponge toss, and many more, all run by FFA members.

The 2010-2011 officer team met many times this summer to prepare for the years upcoming events and activities. Besides meeting weekly throughout the summer, the officer team participated in Allentown Officer Leadership Training (AOLT) and had a great time. This two-day workshop, run by the advisors, helped the new officer team work on team building and leadership skills. The officers are enthusiastic about the many things they have planned for the upcoming year and look forward to meeting the goals they have set for themselves and for the chapter.

At the September chapter meeting, new members received their Greenhand FFA Degree. The officers practiced hard to make sure that they ceremony went off without any problems. Everyone had the chance to meet new friends and as always the refreshments afterwards were tasty.

In October there will be a chapter outing for all members to attend. All members are invited to go to Russo’s Farm after school and  pick apples, pumpkins, go on a hayride, and for those who are adventurous enough, take a ‘turn’ in the hay maze. The Allentown FFA is currently having a bulb sale from now through the beginning of October. National Convention will be held from October 20 to the 23. The Farm Business Management Team will be competing and we wish them all the best of luck! Another event happening in October is the NJ Beach Sweeps. The Allentown FFA will be going to Sandy Hook beach to do their part in helping our beaches and the environment. The chapter meeting is October 28 at 7:30pm at the Ag building. There will be a Halloween costume party following the meeting. October has a lot in store for the FFA and its members!

National Convention...Away!!

(10/19/2010)

And they're off! The Allentown FFA Farm Business Management Team has officially left the state. The four member team, coached by V. Jacque Roszel, is on their way to compete in the National Farm Business Management Career Development Event in Indianapolis, Indiana. We wish them the best of luck and know that they will make us proud.
